Colloquium - HVDC and Power Electronics:
Enhancing the Transmission Networks
Brisbane Australia

19-21 October 2011

Tutorials (Wednesday 19 October)

Comprising two tutorials, the tutorial program, covering an overview as well as the future direction of HVDC and FACTS technology, will precede the colloquium.

Tutorial 1 - Introduction to HVDC

Scope: this tutorial focuses on the fundamentals of HVDC and its integration in the power system, and will include both HVDC technologies, namely Line Commutated Converters (LCC) and Voltage Source converters (VSC). Examples of actual systems and solutions to the integration issues will be addressed.

The following topics will be addressed:

- Applications of HVDC
- Advantages of HVDC
- Configurations of HVDC (with converter as a black box)
- Basic  LCC HVDC theory
- Basic VSC HVDC theory
- Harmonics and Reactive power for LCC HVDC
- Interactions between the ac system and the HVDC system

Duration: 1 day.

Tutorial 2 - HVAC and HVDC Grids

Scope: this tutorial involves HVDC grids as AC overlays, interconnectors, embedded transmission systems and grid extensions.

The tutorial focuses on the system aspects of the application of HVAC and HVDC technologies in transmission grids. The tutorial provides an introduction into state of the art  HVAC and HVDC technologies, with special attention to their application to form meshed transmission grids. The tutorial then moves on to focus on the system aspects related to the:

- embedded operation of fast controllable devices, both FACTS and HVDC within AC grids, and
- future evolution of HVDC grids in isolation or as an overlay above AC grids.

The tutorial comprises technical presentations as well as a final panel session to address topics related to future technology developments with respect to HVAC and HVDC grid configurations and developments.

Duration: 1 day.
